Welcome Messages

您好! Greetings to you all! On behalf of Xi'an, the host city of the First Session of the 2022 UCLG ASPAC Executive Bureau Meeting, I would like to extend a warm welcome to colleagues and guests attending the conference. Since 2020, cities and local governments have faced an extraordinary situation. The pandemic affected the core of our urban living, and local governments needed to react quickly to protect people’s lives and simultaneously look for the best approaches to handle the long-term effects of COVID-19 and economy recovery. Thanks to the spirit and enthusiasm among members, this Executive Bureau Meeting 2022 will be a mile momentum for us to strengthen the collaboration and partnership in attaining sustainable development. Strong international cooperation is needed now more than ever to ensure that our cities have the capacity and resilience to recover from the pandemic, build back better and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. In the 2022 UCLG ASPAC Executive Bureau, under the theme “Join Hands to Build Robust, Green, and Balanced Cities for the Future”, we need to re-thinking, re-shaping, and re-developing our future cities for our future generations. The cities that we want! Sustainable and resilient cities! Let’s start now, together to build robust, green, and balanced cities for the future!

Li Mingyuan

Mayor of Xi'an Municipal People's Government

Namaste! It is again time to re-energize and renew our positivity: What a better time than at the Executive Bureau Meeting of United Cities and Local Governments Asia Pacific (UCLG ASPAC) from 9-10 June 2022! It has been a tough time in our line of work due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. However, as countries are now preparing for economic recovery, we also need to renew our friendship through collaborations, networking and partnership – all in the true spirit of UCLG ASPAC. Let us spend more time to “Join Hands to Build Robust, Green, and Balanced Cities for the Future”. After all, we do have the power to make anything possible. It is time to focus on uniting our strengths to bring out positive changes in our cities. Why not listen to our youth and ensure a brighter future for our children and grandchildren – just like the cities they want to live in? Special thank you to Xi'an Municipal People's Government and Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC) who will be co-hosting the event with the support of UCLG ASPAC strategic partners in the region. I, as President of UCLG ASPAC, and our Secretary General, Dr. Bernadia Irawati Tjandradewi, will be together connected virtually from Jakarta, Indonesia. Like us, most of our valued members will be connected virtually (together where possible) from their respective locations. I eagerly look forward to a very fruitful Executive Bureau Meeting!
